Slán abhaile - "safe home" to the Cambers
After a very fun week of touring with Paul & Pat Camber, we sadly bid them "Slán abhaile" and put them on the train for Dublin out of Westport station. Padraic and Marion had us all over to their house for a lovely farewell dinner last night and the Cambers got a full taste of the Duffys' hospitality. They're off to spend three days in Dublin and then off to London for a few days before heading back to the States. They pledge to visit Ireland again in the near future.
As well, Candee and I have traveled up to the northwestern-most corner of the Republic and will spend a few days in Co Donegal (Dun na ngall) viewing some of the spectacular landscapes here. We're staying at a "Manor House" just outside of Letterkenny. The original house was built in 1609 and was habitated by the Grove family, benevolent English landlords. The house was sold to the Sweeney family in the 1980s and has been built into an elegant country house hotel, with many period furniture pieces. The house overlooks Lough Swilley and we can see the lake from our room (through the wavy ancient glazing of the windows).
We'll be back in Westport on Monday and Tuesday nights for sure, then to Dublin Wednesday night before flying home on Thursday. Padraic may leave Westport on Tuesday with some chums to take the hour drive to the Belmullet peninsula to play the famous oceanside links course, Carne. Avid American golfers spend a lifetime hoping to play this course - it's just a short drive up the road for Padraic.
