Monasterboice

Once a great monastery, now little more than a peaceful cemetery, Monasterboice is dominated by Muiredeach’s High Cross. At 17 feet tall it’s one of the most perfect crosses in Ireland. Dating from 922, the cross is ornamented with sculptured panels of scenes from the Old and New Testament. On the monastery grounds are the remains of a round tower, two churches, two early grave slabs, and a sundial. High Crosses were used to instruct the faithful in the rudiments of the faith during a time when there were few printed bibles and very little literacy.
