The Castles of Trim and Malahide

Both of these castles played important roles in Irish history. Through the Baron Hugh de Lacy of Trim, England was able to get its first foothold in Ireland - leading to nine hundred years of bitter and violent conflict. Trim Castle was used as a backdrop for Mel Gibson's movie Braveheart. Malahide, just north of Dublin, was the home of the powerful Talbot family for 800 years! In 1927, the family donated the castle and its grounds to the Irish government.
